Dormitory vs the Commute to University — How to Pick a Good Location

A daily 30-minute commute = 200 hours a year. How to choose a dormitory close to your university and public transport across 9 Polish cities.

A daily 30-minute commute to university one way is 60 minutes a day, 5 hours a week, 200+ hours a year. That's time you could spend on studying, sport, friendships, or work.

This guide covers how to choose a dormitory with the best possible commute.

A map of optimal distances

Mode of transportComfortable commute time
On footup to 20 minutes
By bikeup to 25 minutes
Tram / busup to 25 minutes
Metroup to 30 minutes
Carup to 20 minutes

Above these thresholds, the daily commute becomes tiring — especially in rain, snow, or rush hour.

What to verify when choosing a location

The real commute time at rush hour. Google Maps shows the "best case" time by default. Enter the address + set it to 8:00 in the morning on a weekday — you'll see the real time, with traffic jams and crowded transport.

How often transport runs. Is the first tram from your location every 5 minutes or every 20? Check the timetable on Jakdojade.pl or Google Maps Transit.

Two different directions. A dormitory that's well connected one way (to the university) but poorly the other (the centre, clubs, shops) is a common problem. Check the commute to at least 3 points: the university, the city centre, the nearest club/restaurant.

Plans for transport development. Is a new metro/tram line planned nearby? It could change the location's value in 2–3 years.

Practical tips

City card / season ticket: buy one straight away — there are often student discounts (50%) or student monthly tickets (around PLN 30–50).

Transport app: Jakdojade (PL), Citymapper, Moovit, Google Maps Transit. They all have live timetables.

Plan B: always have an alternative route. If the tram breaks down, how else will you get there?

Bike: in season (April–October) it's often faster than transport in the city. Check whether the dormitory has a place for a bike (usually yes — a bike room is a PBSA standard).

Conclusion

A dormitory's location isn't just an address — it's the daily rhythm of your life. 20 minutes' commute vs 40 minutes is a difference of 200 hours a year — that's a lot of time to plan how much you'll sleep, read, and exercise.

Choose a location based on an honest measurement of the commute at rush hour, not on the operator's marketing brochure.
